Central Australia, for me it starts when I see the salt pans of Lake Hart in South Australia. Then the large piles of red dirt that mark Coober Pedy, and the mostly underground homes and opal mines. The scrubby arid centre is surprisingly full of life, with brightly coloured birds, herds of wild horses and camels, cattle, big red kangaroos and emus stalking around. The McDonald Ranges mark Alice Springs and the Devils Marble’s for me mark the transition from Central Australia to the Top End and a new part of the journey.
